Simplify your pasta recipe without compromising flavor with only three ingredients.
Italian chef Marcella Hazan is the creator of this recipe and a huge influence on the popularity of Italian cuisine in the US.
1 can (28 oz) of whole peeled tomatoes or crushed tomatoes 5 tablespoons of butter (unsalted is best) 1 medium onion, halved
Open the can of tomatoes. If using whole tomatoes, crush them gently with your hands or a spoon. Peel the onion and cut it in half.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the tomatoes (with their juices), butter and the onion halves.
Bring the mixture to a simmer. Lower the heat to maintain a gentle simmer, and cook uncovered for about 45 minutes.
Stir occasionally, mashing the tomatoes against the side of the pan as they cook.
After 45 minutes, the sauce should have thickened slightly, and the butter will have given it a rich flavor. Remove the onion halves and discard them.
Before serving to your guests, taste the sauce and add salt if needed.
Toss your cooked pasta with your 3-ingredient pasta sauce and enjoy!
This sauce is rich, simple and flavorful despite the minimal ingredients.
