This guide will show you a simple recipe to make a delicious, homemade brown gravy using only three ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
For this recipe, you’ll only need three main ingredients: butter, flour and beef broth. This combination is perfect for a thick, flavorful gravy that complements many dishes.
Start by melting 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Let it fully melt and become slightly bubbly, but avoid letting it brown too much.
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour into the melted butter. Stir constantly with a whisk to create a smooth paste called a roux.
Continue stirring the roux as it cooks to develop a slightly golden-brown color. This will add a nutty flavor to the gravy, enhancing its depth.
Gradually pour in 2 cups of beef broth while whisking continuously. This ensures that the mixture stays smooth without lumps forming.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir often as it begins to thicken, which usually takes about 5-10 minutes.
Once the gravy reaches your desired thickness, taste it. Add salt and pepper if needed. You could also add a touch of garlic powder or onion powder for extra flavor.
For the perfect consistency, the gravy should coat the back of a spoon. If it’s too thick, add a bit more broth; if it’s too thin, simmer it for a little longer.
Your 3-ingredient brown gravy is ready to serve! Pour it over mashed potatoes, roasted meats or any side dish that needs a warm, comforting touch.
Homemade gravy can be easy, quick and delicious.
