High protein diets have been popular in waves since the conjectures of Dr. Maxwell Stillman in the 1960s.IIn the 1990s, the Atkins diet became en vogue.

The theory is exclusively consuming proteins such as beef and eggs with no carbohydrates forces the body to burn fat. This supposedly results in weight loss.

The newest version is the Carnivore Diet, also known as "keto." Unlike predecessors, keto allows for fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Here are recipes to get started.

This is the best cut of steak for the price. The bone imparts a rich flavor and heavy marbling results in a tenderness that can be cut with a butterknife.

Bone-In Ribeye Steak

Season steak with coarse salt, pepper, sliced garlic and rosemary. Sear on iron skillet, then add six stalks of asparagus. Place in oven at 300 F convect for 25 minutes for medium rare.

Recipe

A sinfully decadent treat, the umami of the foie perfectly complements the delicate, slightly gamey, quail.

Foie Gras Stuffed Quail

Spoon 1 oz of foie gras each into the cavities of four quail. Place in a roasting dish with 1/2 cup each chopped shitake mushrooms and shallots. Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Serves four as appetizers or one as a meal.

Duck L'Orange brings to mind an elaborate meal at a French brasserie. This easy recipe dispels the notion. The bright tang of orange brings out the duck's savoriness.

Duck Breast L'Orange

Marinate deboned duck overnight in 1/2 cup orange juice with coarse salt, pepper and basil to taste. Put in oven at 400 F for 35 minutes. The meat will be pink, but this isn't a danger with fresh duck.

Even pescatarians can get in on the keto diet. If carbs aren't an issue, this flaky salmon dish pairs well with rice pilaf.

Baked Salmon

Drizzle olive oil and lemon juice on salmon fillets. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and Herbs de Provence. Bake at 400F for 30 minutes. Garnish with lemon wheel.

Though keto is a short-term weight loss method, a balanced diet is advised. Also consider that certain ethnicities are prone to high cholesterol which excessive meat consumption can exacerbate.
