How To Make Crispy Cornbread Fritters

Cornbread fritters are the perfect combination of crispy, savory, and slightly sweet—making them a crowd-pleasing appetizer or side dish.

Perfect for any gathering, these fritters are easy to make and packed with flavor and now you can learn to make them yourself with this easy guide.

1 cup cornmeal, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 large egg, 2 tbsp melted butter and oil for frying.

Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Make sure the dry ingredients are evenly mixed before adding the wet ones.

Prepare Dry Ingredients

To the dry ingredients, add the buttermilk, egg and melted butter. Stir until just combined, but be careful not to overmix.

Add Wet Ingredients

Heat about 2-3 inches of oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.

Heat Oil

Using a spoon or cookie scoop, carefully drop spoonfuls of the cornbread batter into the hot oil.

Form Fritters

Fry the fritters for about 3-4 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.

Fry Until Golden Brown

Be sure to drain any excess oil from your fritters before getting them ready to serve!

Drain Excess Oil

Serve the cornbread fritters immediately while they are warm and crispy. They pair wonderfully with honey butter, hot sauce or a savory dipping sauce of your choice.
