You can make your own floss sugar or cotton candy sugar at home to create whatever flavor and color of cotton candy you want.
It’s super straightforward and only takes a few ingredients. Here's a simple and customizable recipe to try out on National Cotton Candy Day – Dec. 7!
2 cups granulated sugar 1–2 drops of candy flavoring oil (e.g., vanilla, strawberry or any candy oil flavor) A small amount of gel or powdered food coloring (optional for color)
Pour the granulated sugar into a bowl. Add 1–2 drops of your chosen flavoring. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the flavor.
If coloring is desired, add a very small amount of food coloring and stir until the color is consistent. Gel or powdered products work better than liquid to avoid clumping.
Spread the sugar on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let it air dry for 1–2 hours, ensuring it’s completely dry before using.
For a finer texture, pulse the sugar in a food processor for a few seconds to break it into smaller crystals. This helps prevent clogging in the cotton candy machine.
Store the cotton candy sugar in an airtight container to keep it fresh and free from moisture.
Use the prepared sugar in a cotton candy machine according to its instructions.
Only use candy flavoring oil/extract to flavor the cotton candy as adding other flavorings like sugars or powders can mess up your cotton candy machine.
