The Dark and Stormy is said to have been a favorite among sailors who enjoyed a rum buzz paired with stomach-settling ginger.
To make the refreshing cocktail, you’ll need dark rum, ginger beer and lime.
It’s very similar to a Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger beer and lime). The Dark and Stormy can be a great alternative if you're growing bored of the former!
For an authentic Dark and Stormy experience, splurge on Goslings Black Seal rum from Bermuda.
In 1991, they registered a trademark insisting that any Dark and Stormy drink must be made with Goslings. They’ve even taken legal action against competitors!
To make your cocktail, pour 2 oz. of rum and ½ oz. freshly squeezed lime juice into a tall glass filled with ice.
Next, add ginger beer – not to be substituted for ginger ale – to the top of your glass. A lime wedge makes for a great optional garnish.
While ginger ale is a great mixer, it’s just carbonated water that’s flavored with ginger, as Liquor.com notes.
Ginger beer, however, goes through a brewing and fermentation process that yields different flavors.
Both options will create a satisfying cocktail, but Goslings rum pairs nicely with the strong flavors and spicy bite of ginger beer.
Enjoy, and drink responsibly!
