There’s something magical about gathering around a crackling fire under the stars. An outdoor fireplace adds charm, warmth and a focal point to any backyard space.
You don’t need to hire a contractor or spend a fortune to get one. With the right tools, a weekend or two of elbow grease and a clear plan, you can build your very own outdoor fireplace from the ground up.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials: material lists, safety considerations and step-by-step instructions.
This step is key. Choose a level area that's safely distanced from trees, fences and anything else flammable. It's also important to check your local codes or regulations first.
Concrete blocks or pavers (base and sides) Fire bricks (for the firebox) Fire-resistant mortar Gravel or sand (base) Metal fire ring insert (optional)
Mark out the area. Dig a shallow hole (about 3-4 inches deep) and fill it with gravel or sand and tamp it down flat.
Stack your blocks in a U-shape or a square, depending on your design. Use fire-resistant mortar between layers for stability. Place fire bricks inside where the fire will burn.
Let the mortar cure for at least 24-48 hours before lighting your first fire. Mortar needs time to harden fully. If you fire it up too soon, it’s still soft and weak, your blocks might shift or collapse.
Add some kindling, strike a match and bask in the warm glow, Congratulations, you’ve just built your very own outdoor fireplace!
To keep your fireplace in great shape, clean out ashes regularly, inspect for cracks or loose bricks and patch with fire-resistant mortar as needed. Use a cover to protect it from the elements.
