Homemade taco seasoning is super simple to make and can cost you less in the long run as you can make it out of spices you already keep in your cabinet.
You can adjust your homemade taco seasoning to be as spicy, salty, smokey or whatever other flavor profile you want.
You also know there are no other additives or filler ingredients going in your seasoning that you do not want.
Here’s a simple recipe for homemade taco seasoning that you can use in your tacos, burritos or other dishes.
1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon paprika (you can use smoked paprika for extra flavor) 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat) ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
Combine all of the spices in a small bowl and ensure you've mixed them well.
If you're not using it immediately, transfer the taco seasoning to an airtight jar or container. It can be stored for up to 6 months in a cool, dry place.
For tacos, use about 2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix per pound of meat (beef, chicken, turkey, etc.).
After browning the meat, sprinkle the seasoning over it, add ½ cup of water and let it simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
If you like spicier tacos, you can increase the amount of crushed red pepper or add cayenne pepper. You can also easily scale up the recipe if you want to have more on hand for future meals.
