While some people prefer cakes with a lot of frosting, others might enjoy sweets on the simpler side. This icing without powdered sugar is easy to make and delicious.
With only a handful of ingredients required, this is sure to become a go-to recipe for bakers everywhere.
One might think that the only way to achieve a great icing is by using powdered sugar. However, fully-dissolved granulated sugar also gets the job done.
1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of salt
Over a low heat, dissolve the sugar-milk mixture, stirring constantly for about 5-7 minutes. Undissolved sugar will make the icing gritty and uneven in taste.
In a mixing bowl, beat the butter until it's smooth. Add the sugar-milk mixture a little at a time, continuing to beat the butter-sugar-milk mixture until it's fluffy.
Once your mixture is fluffy and even, add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Continue to beat, ensuring that it's fluffy. Be careful not to over-beat, as it will impact the texture.
If the icing mixture is too fluffy, you can add the milk of your preference. Start with a tablespoon until you reach the desired consistency. This may require adding more sugar.
You can make the icing your own by adding your favorite crunchy toppings like nuts or coconut to dress up your cake.
An airtight container is best for storing frosting in the refrigerator. Before a second use, be sure to let the icing get to room temperature.
