If a hurricane escalates to the point of being within close proximity of your home, you want to have a plan in place. Important things to consider include safety zones and a list of supplies.
Outside of yourself and any loved ones you live with, protecting your home is a priority. Here are some steps to help you prepare for a hurricane.
Knowing the difference between a watch and a warning will keep you safe. The former is usually suggested 48 hours out whereas the latter comes 36 hours out.
As a safety precaution, turn off your water and power. Storm can cause damage to pipes or electric lines, putting you and your family in danger.
When it's time to evacuate, grab the contact information of a shelter in a safety zone, as well as your family and friends. You'll also want a kit with essentials like food and medicine.
Anything that could blow around during the storm and damage your home must be chained down or placed in a shed. This includes bikes, lawn furniture and grills.
Draw your shutters or cover your windows and doors with plywood to prevent glass or other items blowing into the home. This can also minimize water damage.
The nearest safety zone may require a long drive. You might also need to pick up family, friends or locals on the way. Gas stations may be full if you wait until asked to evacuate.
Ahead of hurricane season, devise a plan with your loved ones. Having a few options is best in case the hurricane shifts. Make sure everyone knows how to get to safety.
Now that you've prepared your home to the best of your ability, trust that it will withstand the storm. It's best to evacuate upon first call and always follow guidance from officials.
