Tropical storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds and flooding. Proper preparation can keep you and your family safe. Here’s how to get ready before, during and after the storm.
Stay informed. Regularly check weather updates from reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center and local news stations.
Discuss a plan with your family. Know evacuation routes, a safe meeting place, and contact information.
Gather supplies such as non-perishable food, water (1 gallon per person per day), a flashlight, batteries, first-aid kit, medications and important documents.
Check windows, doors and roofs for loose materials. Secure outdoor furniture, grills and anything else that could become a projectile in high winds.
Prune dead or overhanging branches that could fall and cause damage during strong winds. This reduces the risk of injury and damage to your home.
Have flashlights, extra batteries, candles and a solar or battery-powered charger for devices. Keep a generator on hand if possible, but ensure it's used safely outdoors.
Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas in case of evacuation. Pack your emergency kit, including blankets and extra clothing, in the car in case you need to evacuate.
Check if you’re in a flood or evacuation zone. If local authorities advise evacuation, leave immediately and follow designated routes to safer areas.
Wait for authorities to declare it safe to go outside. Check for damage and report downed power lines. Be cautious of floodwaters, which may hide dangers.
Following these preparation steps will help you stay calm, act quickly and protect yourself when a tropical storm strikes.
