The Sweet Shirley Temple Mocktail

By michael vivar

The Shirley Temple is a sweet, non-alcoholic beverage normally sipped by children while dining out with adults.

The actress after whom the drink is named was America's sweetheart in the 1930s. She starred in popular films including Bright Eyes and The Littlest Rebel.

Legend tells that the Shirley Temple drink was invented by a bartender at a restaurant called Chasen's, which was frequented by the child superstar.

Shirley Temple Ingredients

1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cop lemon-lime soda 1 tablespoon grenadine syrup 1 maraschino cherry

Step 1

Combine orange juice and lemon-lime soda in a tall glass. If the orange juice is fresh-squeezed, strain the pulp.

Step 2

Pour the grenadine in slowly. The sight of red syrup dramatically sinking to the bottom delights many children.

Step 3

Garnish with a maraschino cherry. A black or Amarena cherry can be substituted for a more complex, complementary flavor.

There are sugar-free grenadine syrups on the market. These are great for preventing kids from having a sugar rush/crash.

An adult, married Shirley Temple Black adapted the cocktail to her grown-up tastes with the addition of ginger beer and dark rum.

She also served as US Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. It's fitting to raise a glass of Shirley Temple and toast the drink's accomplished namesake.

"Long ago, I became more interested in the real world than in make-believe." ~ Shirley Temple
