Dec. 11 is National Have a Bagel Day, celebrated for exactly what it sounds like: enjoying one of these beloved, rounded forms of bread. Here is a single bagel recipe you can make to participate.
1/3 cup (40g) bread flour 1/8 tsp instant yeast Pinch of salt 2 tsp sugar 2 tbsp warm water (add more 1 tsp at a time if needed)
1 cup water 1/2 tsp baking soda Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning
In a small bowl, mix the flour, yeast, salt and sugar. Add warm water gradually and mix until it forms a smooth dough. Knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough is elastic and smooth.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Shape the dough into a ball then poke a hole in the center with your finger and gently stretch the hole until it’s about 1 inch wide. Stretch the dough more to form the bagel shape.
Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a small pot and add the baking soda to the boiling water. Drop the bagel into the boiling water and boil for 1 minute on each side.
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the boiled bagel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Add your desired toppings by sprinkling them over the wet bagel then bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the bagel cool for a few minutes before slicing and enjoying.
