Nationalistic pride has made the origin of vodka hotly contested. The Polish insist they invented it in the 8th Century. Russians will fight for their 9th Century development crown.
Regardless, vodka's comparatively neutral flavor profile makes it an excellent base for holiday-themed drinks. Here are four vodka Halloween cocktails.
Three parts Blavod vodka One part Chambord Luxardo cherries Edible gold dust
Combine vodka and Chambord in an ice-filled cocktail mixer. Shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass. Swirl in gold dust. Garnish with Luxardo cherries.
Three parts vodka Two parts apple liqueur One part lemon juice One part Grenadine Blackberries
Combine vodka, apple liqueur, lemon juice and Grenadine in an ice-filled cocktail mixer. Shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with blackberries.
Two parts vodka One part Kahlua One part cream One fake plastic spider
Combine vodka, Kahlua and cream in an ice-filled cocktail mixer. Shake vigorously. Strain into a rocks glass or goblet. Decorate with plastic spider.
Two cups vodka One serrano pepper, seeded and quartered Two cloves garlic, crushed One twist lemon
Combine ingredients in a jug. Seal and let steep for two days at room temperature. Pour into ice-filled cocktail mixer. Shake vigorously. Strain into martini glasses.
