Mariah Carey’s Humble Beginnings in Long Island

Before she became the global pop sensation we know today, Mariah Carey was a young girl living in the suburbs of New York. Born in Huntington, Long Island, her early years were far from the glamorous life she would one day lead. She grew up in a modest, split-level house with her mother, Patricia, and her brother, Morgan. The Careys were far from wealthy, facing financial struggles that shaped much of their children’s upbringing. As she mentioned in her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the East Coast icon had to endure the pressures of her mother’s multiple moves within Long Island; this included stints in Southampton and Brooklyn Heights. These early challenges, however, were also the backdrop for her early musical development.

Her mother, a former opera singer, was a major influence on Carey’s musical interests and ambitions. Their house was relatively simple, with nothing extravagant about the design yet it became the place where Mariah’s immense vocal talent began to take shape. Details about the exact layout of this house are sparse, but it’s clear that Mariah’s roots are grounded in humble circumstances. As her career exploded in the early ‘90s, she outgrew this home, leaving behind the modest surroundings of her youth.

New Beginnings: The Bedford Mansion

In 1993, Mariah Carey (then in her early twenties and already a rising star), married music mogul Tommy Mottola. The couple purchased a massive 51-acre estate in Bedford, Westchester County, New York, for $2 million, marking the beginning of the “Fantasy” hitmaker’s luxurious real estate journey. The mansion was a grand Georgian-style home, spanning 22,000 square feet with nine bedrooms, seven fireplaces and numerous luxury amenities, including an indoor pool, a ballroom and a recording studio where Carey could work on her music in peace.

The estate (which symbolized Mariah Carey’s newfound fame and wealth) was designed with elegance and grandeur, featuring a formal dining room and expansive, manicured lawns. It was a far cry from her childhood home and reflected the kind of opulence that would come to define her lifestyle. However, the house was sold in 1997 after Mariah and Tommy’s tumultuous union ended in divorce, going for $20.5 million to billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz. Unfortunately, the mansion was destroyed by a fire in 1998, as The New York Times reports.

Carey Previously Shared a Bel Air Mansion With Ex-Husband Nick Cannon

In the early 2000s, Carey and her then-husband Nick Cannon purchased a 13,000-square-foot mansion in Bel Air, California. The home was a perfect family retreat, offering six bedrooms, six full bathrooms and three half-baths. The property was designed to accommodate their ever-growing careers while still offering a private sanctuary for their twins, Moroccan and Monroe.

With panoramic views of Beverly Hills and Laguna Beach, this mansion was equipped with all the amenities one would expect. This includes a movie theater, a gym, a basketball court and a luxurious pool area. The couple lived in the Bel Air home until their split in 2015, after which Mariah sold the property for the same $9 million price she had purchased it for, as Elle Decor reports.

Songbird Has Rented Several Properties on the West Coast Since

Mariah’s affinity for Beverly Hills is evident through her choice of rental properties. As All Mariah notes, she previously leased a compound in the Coldwater Canyon area for $100,000 per month. The estate featured nine bedrooms, ten bathrooms, a home theater, a game room with a pool table, a two-lane bowling alley, a swimming pool and a tennis court.

In 2017, Carey and her kids downsized to a $35,000-a-month rental on Laurel Way. This Mediterranean-style residence, once owned by a Russian couple who immigrated in the 1970s, boasts 10,337 square feet with eight bedrooms, four full baths and four half baths. The property includes a pool, spa and expansive terraces with city views, according to Realtor.com.

Mother of Two Maintains Her East Coast Roots With a Stunning Tribeca Penthouse

Mariah Carey also owns a stunning triplex penthouse in the heart of New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, one of Manhattan’s most sought-after areas. It has a grand closet, which Mariah has curated for years. As she professes to Vogue, “I just love glamour…I just love that era, it’s just like magical.” Her space is everything but boring since she implements elements of glamour in every space in her spacious home. The penthouse spans nearly 13,000 square feet and is a true testament to her love of luxury. The residence features a grand living room with soaring 30-foot ceilings (perfect for showcasing her impressive collection of awards and artwork). The chef’s kitchen, large enough to cater to any of her celebrity events, features marble countertops and high-end appliances.

Although her penthouse is very modern, some of her most prized possessions are antiques. She even keeps Marilyn Monroe’s (makeup) compact from her Golden Globe appearance with her there. She also has Marilyn’s baby grand piano, which she bought at auction for over $600,000. These possessions are close to her heart and remind her of Monroe’s impact as a role model for women, which she hopes to emulate for her fans. She keeps it in her penthouse, so it is definitely a great conversation starter for the lover of all things Monroe.

It has so many stunning features which make it an incredible home that matches her lifestyle. For example, the penthouse includes a rooftop garden with breathtaking views of the city. So it is ideal for outdoor entertaining or relaxing in privacy. With five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and ample space for hosting guests, the Tribeca penthouse offers a lavish home base in New York City, balancing glamour with comfort.

More Recently, She Added an Atlanta Estate to Her Real Estate Roster

In 2020, Mariah expanded her real estate portfolio with the purchase of a stunning colonial-style estate in the exclusive Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia. The 12,575-square-foot home was built in 1951. It features nine bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and five half-baths. The mansion’s design is a throwback to traditional Southern architecture. It has crystal chandeliers, marble floors and intricate molding throughout. The property is complemented by a private recording studio, where Carey works on new music, and a pink-themed dressing room — an homage to her iconic style.
