How To Clean Ceiling Fans
Suit Up
Before you begin cleaning, you’ll need to don the proper gear. Ceiling fans are a prime location for large dust particles and potential allergens that can make cleaning uncomfortable. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to keep your breathing area clear and safe. A disposable face mask should provide sufficient protection while you clean, while rubber gloves will keep your hands clean and mess-free.
Dusting Blades
While there are other methods for cleaning a ceiling fan, this technique has proven to be the most effective for trapping dust. Once you’ve suited up and positioned the ladder under the fan, which should be turned off, slowly slide the pillowcase over the first blade and wipe gently. This method is preferred over an extendable duster because it swiftly removes dust from all sides of the fan’s blade in one swoop. When the blade has been gently dusted, slide the pillowcase toward you so that the particles will fall directly inside. Then repeat on the remaining blades around the fan.
Cleaning With Solution
After each blade has been rid of the dust on the surface, it’s time to kick things up a notch with your preferred cleaning solution. Using a clean microfiber cloth, gently spritz it and wipe down each blade. With the initial layer of dust removed, you’ll have no problem cleaning the blades and can move through the process quickly.
Cleaning Light Fixtures
The light fixture should be handled with just as much, if not more, care than the blades. Whether you have a globe or lamp fixture, carefully unscrew the glass structure and remove it from the fan. They can then be soaked in soapy water with a small concentration of the cleaning solution before being wiped dry with a clean microfiber towel. Any other features, such as a pull chain, motor, or mount, can be wiped down with a damp rag and left to air dry.
