Skip the store-bought version and create your own flaky, flavorful pop-tarts with simple ingredients!
You'll need flour, butter, salt, sugar, milk and an egg for the dough. Choose jam, Nutella or peanut butter for your filling. To make the glaze, mix powdered sugar, vanilla and milk.
In a bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt. Add cubed butter and mix until crumbly.
Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough comes together. Form a ball, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thick. Cut into rectangles and lay half of them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Spoon 1-2 teaspoons of jam or chocolate spread onto the center of each dough rectangle. Leave a small border around the edges.
Place another rectangle of dough on top of the filling. Press the edges together and use a fork to crimp them shut. Brush the top with an egg wash for a golden finish.
Preheat your oven to 375°F. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool completely before adding the glaze.
Mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 2-3 tablespoons of milk. Add vanilla or food coloring for extra flavor. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled pop-tarts.
Top with sprinkles or crushed nuts while the glaze is still wet. Let set for 10 minutes before serving.
