The holidays are finally over. As much affection there is for friends and relatives, peace is a welcome respite. One thing that remains is all the leftover ham.
An advantage ham has over other holiday main courses like turkey or prime rib is it lasts. It's cured with salt or smoke for preservation. Ham can also be frozen for months.
Here are seven ideas on how to use your leftovers. With ham's quantity and longevity, it's possible to try them all.
Upgrade the endless pedestrian ham sandwiches of the past. Brush soft Hawaiian rolls with butter, use Swiss cheese, then toast in the oven for a crispy, gooey meal.
The saltiness of the ham and the richness of just-ripe avocado complement perfectly on the palate. Add arugula or kale boosting iron and fiber.
Biscuits can be from scratch or use store-bought tubes. Encase ham and gruyere in dough. Bake as directed in biscuit recipe. Umami will be suffused into every delectable bite.
Sauté ham for a few seconds then add day-old white rice. Drizzle in low-sodium soy sauce and stir. Serve with a poached egg split down the middle so the yolk slowly runs.
This one's easy and literally thrown together. Layer sliced ham, frozen green beans, smoked gouda then frozen tater tots. Bake in oven as directed on tater tot instructions.
If the original ham was bone-in, boil the bone for a base broth. Add cubed ham and red beans. Stir in diced veg and potatoes if desired. This will ward off the winter chill.
Sandwich cubed ham, shredded mozzarella and scrambled eggs between two small sheets of store-bought puff pastry. Cut to desired shape. Bake until golden brown.
