A Step-By-Step Guide to Texas Trash Pie

National Pie Day is a great time to explore the variety of pies that have become a cornerstone of American culture.

If you're looking to expand beyond the typical apple and pecan, Texas Trash Pie is certainly a unique take on the pastry.

This dessert first appeared in the Round Top Cafe of Round Top, Texas in the late '80s. Its invention came about as a way to use up common pantry items.

Although it began in Texas, this Frankenpie of flavours has become a popular treat in many places. It combines sweet and salty elements to create the perfect comfort food.

If you're curious to try the pie yourself, here is a step-by-step guide.

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup caramel bits 1 cup graham crackers, crushed 1 cup pretzels, crushed 1 can sweetened condensed milk

Ingredients

1 cup pecan pieces 1 cup shredded coconut 1 stick unsalted butter, melted 1 pie crust

Ingredients

While these ingredients are the traditional choice, feel free to personalize the recipe by adding or omitting items to suit your taste.

Preheat oven to 350F and crush equal parts graham crackers and pretzels in a ziplock bag.

Combine the rest of the ingredients with the pretzels and crackers. You're going to want to use equal parts of all the fillings with the exception of butter.

Fill up a pre-prepared, frozen pie crust with the mixture and bake for about 40-45 minutes.

Allow to cool for 20 minutes and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
