A birthday party is often the best day of the year for a child, but for parents, it can feel more like an obligatory event than a fun one. While the kids are splashing around on water slides and lining up for face paint, parents find themselves on the sidelines, making small talk that’s less than thrilling. Let’s be honest—most would prefer a quick drop-off than to stick around for the cake and ice cream. As a host, this can amount to a lot of pressure. You want your kids to have a blast with their friends, but you also don’t want to end up with a group of kids to manage for hours. By incorporating some adult-friendly favorites and activities, you can keep parents entertained, too. Keep reading for tips on hosting an epic kids’ birthday party that will have adults raving just as much as the little ones.

1. Serve Alcohol (Responsibly, of course)

An alcoholic beverage or cocktail hour can be a great way to encourage socializing, but it’s crucial to make sure these drinks don’t get mixed up with the fruit punch. Serve something light, like wine coolers with a lower alcohol content, and keep them in their original containers or specially designated cups for adults only.

2. Set Up a Game Area

Even as adults, we still love playing games. Set up an area with activities for a little friendly parental competition. Include card and board games and hands-on challenges, such as potato sack races and tug-of-war.

3. Offer Delicious Eats

Pizza and chicken nuggets might be the perfect menu for the kids, but they’re not exactly a hit with the parents. With all the chaos of planning and setting up, cooking a full-course meal is probably out of the question. Instead, consider picking up a charcuterie board, fruit tray, and some mini sandwiches to satisfy your grown-up guests.

4. Show a Sports Game

Some parents won’t take their eyes off their children for a second, while others welcome a bit of distraction. To give the latter something to enjoy, consider streaming a sports game. It’s a simple way to engage everyone and spark conversation.

5. End With a Parents-Only Raffle

Kids are usually the only ones who leave with something (presents for the birthday girl and goody bags for her guests). Add an extra suprise to the party by handing out raffle tickets upon entry, with a special prize for the winner. Since it is a child’s party, choose a prize that kids and parents can enjoy together, such as a season pass to an amusement park.
