Color plays an integral role in how we present ourselves to the world. A wardrobe of neutral tones often conveys easygoing and effortless. On the contrary, a closet full of black attire can come across as assertive, albeit fashionable. The fact that color can have such an impact isn’t a coincidence—it’s science, and more specifically, psychology. Color theory is the study of how different colors affect visual perception and behavior. It’s linked to every facet of life, from advertising to fashion and interior design. Certain colors can add warmth, while others help emphasize a particular design style or aesthetic.

Sometimes the shades and combination of colors can have a deeper, more impactful meaning. Take the combination of red, green, yellow, and black. You may recognize them as the flag colors of several African countries or the shades tied to Black History Month. While both of these connections are true, this classic combination is also becoming an unspoken design trend in many Black homes. Rich in color and history, the rise of these shades in the design world is a prime example of the power of color theory.

The Significance of Black History Month Colors

The pairing of red, green, yellow, and black colors is rooted in African history. It is most notably reflected in the Ethiopian flag, which features green, yellow, and red, and the Pan-African flag, which features red, black, and green. The tri-color combination and horizontal stripe pattern only emphasize the bold nature of the shades. However, it’s important to note that each color has its distinct meaning.

As stated in a book published by the Marcus Garvey-founded Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA): “Red is the color of the blood which men must shed for their redemption and liberty. Black is the color of the noble and distinguished race to which we belong. Green is the color of the luxuriant vegetation of our Motherland.”

Color Theory and Interior Design Trends

Just as your wardrobe colors speak volumes about your personality, the hues of your home can too. Deciding on a color scheme isn’t always top of the list when settling into a new space. But choosing the shades and tones that best represent your style or voice is very important. It creates an ambiance and sets the tone for the rooms in your home.

As design styles shift away from Millennial gray and simplistic ideas, the focus is becoming more about cultural references. Inside many Black homes, art and decor are leaning toward bolder color palettes using modern versions of the Black History Month colors. Mustard yellow, forest green, and burnt orange may sound new age, but their tie to Black history and culture is deeply rooted.

On their own, each shade conveys bold and maximalist energy. A forest green color-drenched room or mustard yellow furniture probably feels over the top. However, when used in tandem with warm oranges, rich reds, and earth tones, the colors take on a whole new feeling. No longer too vibrant to decorate a small apartment or living room, the color combination feels like a powerful statement of pride, style, and comfort.

A Modern Take on Tradition

With bold colors back in the forefront of interior design trends, it’s unsurprising to see these particular shades showing up in Black homes. However, the way they are being incorporated is truly exciting. Whether in first apartments of 20-somethings or established abodes or family homes of 30-somethings, millennial and Gen Z Blacks are embracing the colors of their history with modern flair.
