Campari has been around for a long time. Maybe you knew what the Italian beverage was already. Or, maybe you never heard of it until the Italian liquor brand was featured in Justin Smith Uzomba’s short film Keeping Up a Parent, Sis, which was the winner at Soho House Shorts 2024. (One of the judges, Oscar-winning writer-director Barry Jenkins and the creator of Moonlight, was also impressed with Uzomba’s creation.)

Whether Campari is your go-to drink or something you’re curious about because of the short film, there’s a wide selection to choose from. If you’re not sure whether you want to commit to this drink but think your friends and family might be game to try it, incorporate a Campari cocktail with the party food at your next gathering. Make sure your guests drink responsibly (and have a safe ride home) before sharing these seven drinks in your home bar. Here are seven suggested cocktails to try.

History of Campari Founders

In 1860, Gaspare Campari invented this drink and ran his business from the then-newly built Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an epicenter of Milano. He named the building Caffè Campari, which looked toward the iconic Piazza Duomo. Davide Campari, the heir of the Campari business, was born on November 17, 1867. When his father passed away, Davide created the bar Camparino in Galleria. He also introduced Red Passion to Milanese people as a pre-dinner drink with light bites. In 1920, his first cocktail (Negroni) was created. Both Red Passion and Negroni were listed on the International Bartenders Association (IBA) drinks list in “The Unforgettable” category.

Artists started to work with Campari, marking the connection between the drinks and artwork. One well-known example of this partnership is Leonetto Cappiello, who designed the famous Spiritello spirit wrapped in an orange peel. Attilio Rossi, Giovanni Mingozzi and Nino Nanni were inspired by the Olympics in their Red Passion art. Then came the illustrator Franz Marangolo who, in the ’60s and ’70s, drew inspiration from Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck to blend a hustle-and-bustle lifestyle with leisure. From print art and posters to digital art to celebrities and models such as Winnie Harlow, the drink has gotten a co-sign from many for over a century.
