There’s something magical about the transition to the festive season—a time when homes transform into winter wonderlands filled with twinkling lights, garlands, and holiday cheer. For many families, decorating for the holidays is a beloved tradition that signals the start of the most wonderful time of the year. Growing up, I watched my mom begin her decorating ritual on November 1st without fail. As soon as Halloween was over, she’d pull out boxes of ornaments, string up lights, and turn our home into a holiday haven.

Now, thanks to HomeGoods, I’m even more ready to begin decorating to the fullest extent with their third annual Deck The Everything Day. Celebrated on November 1st, this special day encourages shoppers to embrace the holiday spirit and go all out with their decorations. This year, the brand has partnered with my childhood icons and twin sisters, Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry-Housley, to really hype up lovers of the holiday season with their decoration tips and tricks. “I love an evergreen traditional Christmas!” Tamera exclaimed—and honestly, so does this writer.

On November 1st, HomeGoods will open one hour early so shoppers can find holiday decor that best suits their personal taste.

Whether you’re a minimalist decorator or someone who believes more is more when it comes to holiday cheer, there’s no denying that the right decor can transform your space and lift your spirits. The Mowry sisters have perfected the art of creating warm, inviting holiday homes over the years, and they’re sharing their expertise to help you do the same. To get you really in the spirit, we have a few tips and tricks the “Sister, Sister” duo swear by.

Tia’s Top Holiday Decorating Tips:

Embrace Your Holiday Alter Ego

“Most of the year, I’m a minimalist, but once the holidays hit, I flip the switch to full-on maximalist mode. I pile on the candles, layer throws across the sofa, and can never resist grabbing a few statement decor pieces at HomeGoods to really bring that festive vibe alive,” the actor says. “HomeGoods makes it fun to discover unique pieces that help me lean into that alter ego without overspending. It’s the one time of year I let myself be extra, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Set the Mood with Scents & Sounds

“Holiday style isn’t just about what you see; it’s about what you feel. I light candles in fragrances like pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg to layer in coziness, and of course, my decorating playlist is always on.” Tia explains. “Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men are staples in our house, and the kids sip hot chocolate while we decorate the tree.”

Ground Your Glitter with Greenery

“A wreath on the door, garlands along the banister, or poinsettias on the table instantly make a space feel cozy and intentional,” Tia advises. “I love picking up faux stems and decorative vases there because they last all season long without upkeep—the easiest way to make even the simplest arrangement feel festive.”

Tamera’s Top 5 Holiday Decorating Tips:

Mix Textures for Rustic Elegance

“My style is rustic but still elegant, and the easiest way to achieve that balance is through texture,” Tamera explains. “I love mixing hand-blown glass bulbs with burlap bows, satin ribbons with glittery accents, so our space feels full of character.”

Let Your Tree Tell a Story

“I’ve always believed the Christmas tree should feel personal. In our house, it’s filled with ornaments that tell our story, from the kids’ handmade creations to treasures we’ve picked up on family trips,” says Tamera. “I also love choosing a theme each year–this year we’re going with a winter wonderland tree.”

Set the Table for Celebration

“Hosting Christmas dinner is one of my favorite traditions, and I always want the table to feel just as special as the food we serve,” Tamera shares. “I love to bring my rustic but elegant style to life—from festive table settings like ceramic gingerbread houses and decorative glassware to charcuterie boards and seasonal serveware.”
