When actors KJ Smith and Skyh Black pulled into the driveway of what would become their new home, it wasn’t the square footage or the grandeur that won them over — it was the feeling. The lush, rolling lawn. The front porch made for rocking chairs and Sunday sweet tea. The fountain out front, already alive in their minds with Easter egg hunts and future family milestones. “We actually had a contract on another house,” KJ recalls, “but this one just felt more like forever.”

The couple, who relocated from Los Angeles to Atlanta, have found not just a home but a legacy. Nestled on four acres of land just outside the city, the estate is more than 10,000 square feet and dates back to 1976 — built solid with concrete columns and copper piping, and rich with Southern charm. It’s the kind of house that immediately commands presence, yet invites warmth. And for KJ and Skyh, who are expecting their first child together and raising a growing multigenerational family, it’s a canvas for joy, heritage, and hospitality.
With deep roots in the South and grandmothers who helped shape their values, KJ and Skyh are creating a home where legacy lives. They’re installing an elevator to accommodate elderly family members and expanding the home to eventually include a third floor. “We really want our grandmothers to feel comfortable staying here,” KJ says. “They’re part of everything we do.”
Their design approach is grounded in a “southern traditional meets artistic contemporary” style — one that honors the house’s historic bones while layering in new meaning with plans to fill the walls with artwork by Black artists like Laura Bodega and John Moody.

Inside, the couple has plenty of hosting spaces to take advantage of, and they’re also making intentional updates to create both style and comfort. One of the coolest features of the home is the indoor pool — a sun-soaked oasis with vaulted ceilings and oversized windows that feels like a retreat.

For Skyh, the basement holds endless potential. “There’s a vintage bar down there from the previous owners, and I can’t wait to turn it into my man cave,” he says with a grin. Their shared vision is to create a space that’s always ready for a gathering — from intimate family dinners to full-scale celebrations. “Hosting is big for us,” KJ notes. “We did it in LA, and we’re definitely continuing that here.”

The couple has already started envisioning holidays with loved ones, catered events on the lawn, and spontaneous movie nights in their plush home theater, complete with red leather recliners and vintage gold accents. The home’s sprawling layout allows them to entertain while still maintaining a sense of calm, grounding, and privacy.
While their styles blend effortlessly, KJ admits she gets the final say on most design decisions. “Skyh is fully supportive, but he’s really taken the reins on the nursery,” she shares. With their daughter on the way, he’s determined to get every detail perfect for her. “He’s running a tight ship,” she says, smiling.
Together, they’re planning renovations that will expand the home’s livable space by nearly 4,000 square feet. But even in its current state, every inch of the home tells a story — from the dramatic staircase entry to the antique moulding that offer poetic juxtapotistion against the bold Black art they’re bringing in. It’s this intentional layering of old and new, personal and communal, that makes their space feel so distinctly theirs.

For KJ and Skyh, the move to Atlanta marks the beginning of a new rhythm. “We feel safe here,” they share. “Grounded. Energized. Inspired.” Whether they’re working on set, hosting family, or simply slowing down to enjoy the rocking chairs on their front porch, there’s a sense that everything is aligned.
As they continue to grow their family and pour love into every corner of the home, their goal remains the same: to build a space that welcomes — and honors — everyone they love.
