The ‘90s were a special time for Black cinema, and few films have held us like “The Best Man.” The complicated love story between a group of college friends is a staple in my personal holiday movie lineup, followed by the famed Christmas sequel. Watching the movies feels like catching up with old friends during that special time of year. That’s the exact sentiment behind Sable Bourbon, a new liquor brand created by three of the storied cast members—Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, and Harold Perrineau—and the film’s director, Malcolm D. Lee. The quartet has reunited to launch and promote the new brand in style.
If you’re a fan of the franchise, then you know that brotherhood and friendship are core pillars of the story. Throughout the two films, there is more than one scene with the men bonding over glasses of whiskey and reliving the moments of their past. With that in mind, this new venture feels like a full-circle moment.
According to the brand’s website, Sable was created from the founder’s passion for storytelling and whiskey-making. The official campaign, shot by photographer and filmmaker Tori Time, shows the cast looking their best in impeccably tailored suits with crisp shirts and sharp elements. It’s the epitome of Black excellence and exudes the clean and polished style we’ve come to know the characters for.
The bottle is also the picture of elegance, housed in a sleek design with simple black and silver packaging. Inside, you’ll find a blend of the traditional bourbon grains for a familiar flavor profile. However, the mash bill gives you the best insight into what to expect when sipping. Composed of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley, Sable is crafted to have a unique palate of burnt sugar, dark chocolate, marzipan, and pear, with decent oak and spiced aromas.
The joint venture not only celebrates the deep friendship and brotherhood but also the history of the spirit. With more celebrities, artists, and Hollywood stars entering the world of whiskey and bourbon (Beyoncé’s Sir Davis, A$AP Rocky’s Mercer + Prince, and Steph Curry’s Gentleman’s Cut, to name a few), this Sable is a welcomed launch to the space. The announcement also feels timely, given the film’s ties to the holidays and winter weather that complements bourbon so well.
