Headed to Australia next year for multiple tour dates, Dionne Warwick continues to be a force within music and media. Born in East Orange, the New Jersey native got her start as a child while singing in her grandfather’s church. Ancestry of vocal greatness would speak to her success as a vocalist. And her success in music would garner much traveling, taking her away from her hometown. Where does Dionne Warwick live now? Here’s what we know.
Who Is Dionne Warwick?
Dionne Warwick is a six-time Grammy award-winning, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. At 14 years old, with her sister and cousin, Warwick formed The Gospelaires, a gospel singing group. Together, the trio sang in local churches, on college campuses and in African-American theaters. Their talent would be recognized and celebrated upon winning an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater. The Gospelairs continued to sing, supporting the vocals of acts like Dinah Washington over the next few years. Warwick would go on to receive a music scholarship to the University of Hartford. While singing with The Drifters, she was introduced to Burt Bacharach. The music conductor and composer, after hearing her voice, signed Warwick to a recording contract. Between 1963 and 1966, Warwick became the first crossover artist to achieve 12 hit singles in the Top 100.
Walking On by to East Orange To Start a Family
In her personal life, and before she returned to South Orange, she had plenty to sing about when it came to love. In fact, she married the same man (William Elliot) in 1996, divorced him a year later and re-married him shortly after. The Baltimore native shared musical dreams with her, studying at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to become a drummer. The two met while he was playing for the Rhoda Scott Trio. In between making up to breaking up, on January 18, 1969, while living in East Orange, the two welcomed their first son, David Elliott. Four years later, Damon arrived.
Her Move From New Jersey, California and Brazil
According to a Tampa Bay Times article, Warwick was the owner of a Beverly Hills mansion too. After being on the market for years at $6.5 million, that home was finally sold for $1.8 million in 1995. Built in 1931 and later remodeled, the 7,000-square-foot home included five bedrooms and a tennis court. At the time of her 13th album for Arista Records, which had a collection of Brazilian songs, she still planned to keep another home of hers in Brazil. Very familiar with the area, she’d toured around Rio de Janeiro for more than three decades. However, in 2005, the songstress sold her Bahia, Brazil home to support her mother and sister, who were ill.
Where Does Warwick Live Now?
Now living in South Orange, she has a street named after her: North Arlington Avenue near City Hall Plaza in East Orange. Fans of her career can travel back in time to watch her six-decade career unfold in the 2022 documentary Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over. Besides the Australian tour dates next year, what’s next on her agenda? She may still plan to buy another home and retire in Bahia. Why? According to the Hall of Famer, “It felt as if my roots are there. It beckons me.”
