When Troy Taylor partnered with brothers Onaje and Omari Henderson to open ZuCot Gallery in 2011, they brought an engineer’s precision to the art world. Taylor’s career began with NASA’s Manned Space Station program after earning degrees from Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania, while the Henderson brothers, both Tuskegee University alumnus, inherited their appreciation for art from their father, himself an artist and former engineer. This unique combination of technical expertise and artistic passion informs every aspect of ZuCot Gallery’s inspiring operation. Together, they’ve created the largest African-American art gallery in the southeast.

ZuCot Gallery stands apart in Atlanta’s rich art scene with its commitment to showing only original works. This dedication to exclusivity ensures each piece maintains its value and significance. Currently, the gallery hosts “Favorite Things,” an exhibition featuring 11 artists whose works have particularly resonated with the owners over the years.

For those interesting in learning more about art and collecting, ZuCot Gallery hosts events called “Art Tastings” that draw out the best of the art community. “The purpose of these Art Tastings is to teach people how to collect, why to collect, but not what to collect,” explains Onaje Henderson, describing the gallery’s innovative approach to art education. These events, led by artists themselves, create an accessible entry point for new collectors while maintaining the sophistication of the gallery itself that has draws visitors like investor Robert Smith and singer John Legend.

Where Art Meets Science

In a groundbreaking partnership with Microsoft, ZuCot has developed a virtual gallery experience that bridges the gap between digital and physical art spaces. Visitors can explore past exhibitions through a large touch-screen installation in the gallery or visit virtually through zucotgallery.com, making fine art more accessible than ever.

This modern addition to an otherwise traditional gallery seamlessly blend the owners’ dual passions for art and technology.

A Space for Community

The gallery maintains its commitment to public access by opening its doors free of charge every Saturday, with rotating installations every three months and appointment-only viewings available throughout the week. According to Omari Henderson, their “largest clientele is Black professionals of all ages,” reflecting the gallery’s success in creating an inclusive space for art appreciation and collection in the Black community.
