The secret to my memorable game nights is Nintendo's Wii and its classic games.

As a longtime host, I frequently throw gatherings to watch old sci-fi movies, listen to timeless albums, celebrate birthdays, and play multiplayer video games. Between my admiration for inviting my loved ones over and the creativity behind planning a party with a niche theme, I’m always looking for something new to entertain my guests. And recently, I’ve learned that the solution to throwing successful parties is almost as old as me.

One of Nintendo’s oldest consoles, the Wii, is a staple in my household, and it’s a classic addition to a game night. Since the console is 18 years old, it’s easy to forget that it’s one of Nintendo’s best-selling home consoles, but its popularity is clear once you play a game like Wii Sports. Since the game was included with every purchase of the Wii, it’s unsurprising that the video game performed highly across multiple generations while promoting physical activity, cognitive function, and socialization. The sports simulation game is an interactive way to convince your loved ones to embarrass themselves over a virtual game of bowling, boxing, or tennis, and it’s always worth it.

And its sequel, Wii Sports Resort, is a dreamy escape to a virtual island to play twelve different sports, including golf, skydiving, and archery. At a recent game night, my friends, who aren’t gamers, were encouraged to play a round of sword fighting, and they ended up playing several games against each other. In addition to the heartwarming feeling of introducing my non-gaming friends to a new interest, I received kind texts following the game night that immediately confirmed that the Wii was one of my best items to bring to New York City.

Both of these games are only the beginning of potential Wii-centered game nights in my household. During this year’s Olympics, my roommates and I hosted an Olympic-themed party and decorated our living room with flags from every country, and the featured game of the evening was Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. This golden crossover series from Sega and Nintendo is a forgotten masterpiece of the 2010s, and my roommates and I celebrated the Olympics by playing its collection of 30 games.

Leaning into the nostalgic aspect of owning a Wii is another highlight of owning the old console. It sounds cliche, but games aren’t quite the same anymore. Most consoles don’t offer Michael Jackson-themed dance games or other cardio-based games, especially with an accessory like the Wii Balance Board. Some of my best childhood memories were in front of a Just Dance loading screen, and it’s exciting to revive that energy during game nights in my adulthood.

Although I love my Nintendo Switch for a traditional game night, it wouldn’t exist without the Wii. If you’re looking to invest in something to spice up your game nights, I recommend visiting a local video game store or eBay to buy a refurbished Wii. You won’t regret your purchase once you’re playing Mario Kart with the clunky Wii Wheel. Plus, you might find yourself collecting vintage games in no time.
