Have you ever been scrolling through TikTok or perusing Pinterest for DIY decor, only to realize that building isn’t your strong suit? We’ve all been there before; with countless creators showcasing their cool renovations and DIY projects, it’s easy to get swept up in the spirit. But not everyone is handy, including this writer. So, when I came across this easy coaster tutorial, I knew I’d finally found a DIY project I could recreate with no problem.
Coasters are an essential part of my home. Whether on my bar cart, coffee table, or console table, they’re the kind of item that’s functional and stylish. That said, I like to have a few different variations on hand. When I found Briana Thomas’ (@brianabrown03_) tutorial for a chic travertine set that was a dead ringer for high-end versions like those found at RH and Crate & Barrel, I was intrigued. Her budget, DIY version is easy to replicate, and the materials can be found at any local hardware store. If you’re looking for a fun weekend project that will give you impressive coasters and a story to tell your friends, this is a great DIY to try. Keep reading to see how to create your own set of stunning coasters in no time at all.

How She Did It
While some DIYs require heavy lifting, additional tools, and a bit of skill, this project is truly beginner-friendly. The first step is to gather the materials you’ll need to make the coasters. To begin, head to the hardware store and make your way to the tile aisle. Peel-and-stick tiles are becoming increasingly popular, and there are many different styles to choose from. Since these coasters are meant to have a rustic effect, a travertine material will be best. Travertine is a sedimentary rock that’s formed when calcium carbonate minerals precipitate from fresh water. In that vein, it’s usually found in rocky areas with groundwaters such as springs and rivers. The formation of the rock has a distinct look that’s popular in minimal and clean design aesthetics.
What You Need
For these coasters, you’ll need to look for a peel-and-stick tile panel that has an assortment of squares. The full panel may include other shapes, like various rectangles, but the squares will be the base of the coaster. Look for a panel that has a few squares to it, like the one in Thomas’ video. Be sure to pick up a few slabs if you’re looking to make a larger group of coasters. Next, you’ll need to pick up felt bumpers, traditionally used for the bottom of furniture legs. These will raise the coasters and protect the surface of your tabletop.
Once home, take a strong pair of scissors and begin to cut the tile panel, separating the pieces and saving the squares. Then, take the bumpers and gently place them on the corners of each square. The adhesive should be strong enough to hold, but if you’d like a more secure fit, you can add a bit of glue before sticking them to the tiles. The final result will be a stunning set of coasters that is sure to impress your guests at your next gathering.
