Mastering the Art of Cooking: 5 Cookbooks for Beginners

Cooking doesn't come naturally to everyone, but these books will help you nail it!

Trying new restaurants is one of my favorite pastimesβ€”a guilty pleasure, as someone who dines out less often might call it. When I have dinner plans, I always peek at the menu beforehand, picking a cocktail that speaks to me and a dessert that sounds too good to skip. After a delicious bite, my first thought is always, “Damn, I wish I could make something like this at home.” I cook for myself, but when I’m rotating through the same meals every week, I start to wonder what it’s like being friends with Gordon Ramsay. No cooking class will turn you into a Michelin-starred chef overnight, but with time and a good cookbook, you can master bold flavors and expert techniques.

Just like there are countless restaurants, there are countless cookbooks, making it hard to narrow down the options. For beginners, it’s best to start simple and level up as you go. A book full of flambe chapters won’t do much good if you haven’t learned to sautΓ©. Don’t be ashamed of whipping up a few inedible disasters; with practice, you’ll get better. Before long, you’ll be hosting impressive dinner parties, with guests eagerly awaiting your next invite. Ready to take on your kitchen? Here are five cookbooks that will teach you the art of cooking well from home.

“Cooking From the Spirit” by Tabitha Brown

Hey Auntie! Tabitha Brown first went viral for posting her delicious vegan recipes. Her secrets to making plant-based are available in her New York Times Bestselling book, "Cooking From the Spirit." Great for vegans and non-vegans, she brings creativity to the kitchen, sharing recipes that anyone can enjoy. This book includes everything from sides to desserts, like potato salad and strawberry cheesecake cups. We love it for its fun, lively essence--just like Tab.

“Between Harlem and Heaven” by Alexander Smalls, JJ Johnson, and Veronica Chambers

"Between Harlem and Heaven" is a James Beard award-winning cookbook that features recipes from the kitchens of two prominent Black chefs based in Harlem, NY. You'll find fusion cooking within its pages, inspired by Asian, African, and American flavors. Elevate your palette with simple yet refined meals like grilled watermelon salad with lime mango dressing and cornbread croutons.

“The Quick Fix Kitchen” by Tia Mowry

Tia Mowry's kitchen is about health and wellness, which means stress-free meals. More than a cookbook, this is one of our go-to's for recipes, along with tips and tricks for organization and meal planning, advice for living a healthier lifestyle, and ways to get the kids involved. If you want to get into meal prepping but can't find your groove, you'll love it!

“My America” by Kwame Onwuachi and Joshua David Stein

Chef Kwame's New York City restaurant, Tatiana, is one of the hardest in the country to get right now. It was named the best restaurant in the city by the NYT in 2023 and 2024, so it's safe to say these recipes are some of the tastiest you can find. "My America" includes a whopping 125 recipes celebrating the flavors of the African Diaspora. While you won't get a seat at Tatiana's tables anytime soon, you can bring the chef's unique cuisine to your own.

“The Full Plate” by Ayesha Curry

Another New York Times Bestseller, "The Full Plate," swears by easy recipes that promise to take less than an hour. In it, you'll find Ayesha Curry's take on traditional takeout, cocktails, kids' favorites, and more. The family-focused cookbook is perfect for anyone who likes to switch it up often. Serve mouthwatering hot honey chicken sandwiches on game day, or prepare succulent crab bucatini for an at-home date night.
