Standing desks have become the benchmark for home offices. Not only do they keep you from being sedentary all day, but they can also be ideal for improving your posture and overall health. The only problem? They aren’t exactly stylish. Instead of sleek, they appear bulky and have minimal design elements. When Chrystal King (@chrystalking_) gave her standing desk a chic makeover, she couldn’t have been more thrilled with the results. However, the comment section of her TikTok video had differing opinions. One commenter noted that her new desk looked great until it was raised, saying that the standing position looked cheap and poorly made.
Takeaways
New
The comment might have come from a negative point of view, but King realized she agreed. It was more than enough for the DIY enthusiast to go back to the drawing board to give her standing desk an upgrade. Her original project aimed to transform her standing desk into a functional work of art. For the design, she drew inspiration from sculptural, spherical shapes and warm colors to create a cozy working environment. IKEA’s popular wooden salad bowls were used to create the globes, but the result was pretty close to her original sketches. However, when the issue came to her attention, she began crafting a new plan.
@chrystalking_ Replying to @Gee I didn’t think that I could love this table anymore than I do but here we are 😂🥹 it’s perfect, this time I’ve used the top bowls as storage for snacks and cables too!! so thanks to everyone that suggested that 🫶🏽 #dıy #interiordesign #homemakeover #3dprinting
Addressing the Problem
According to King, the commenter raised a valid point about the legs of her standing desk. “When the desktop is down, I’m obsessed with the look. But the second it’s raised, the legs look a little awkward,” she says. This is due mainly to the globes that sit at the base of the desk. Unlike the others on the legs, which are fully formed, the uppermost globes are chopped in half, revealing their hollow insides when the desktop is raised.
How She Fixed It
To fix the problem, King had to view the desk in full standing mode. After raising it to a comfortable height, she noticed a lack of consistency in her original design. While the bottom of the desk was completely covered, the portion that rose was still gray and dull. This was a quick fix with peel-and-stick contact paper. However, the issue of the hollowed globes proved to be much more difficult.
Her first design, created from cardboard, didn’t give her the luxe look she’d hoped for. With a plan to keep her desk from appearing cheap, she went back to the drawing board. This time around, she devised a sound design utilizing 3D-printed panels to create a lid for the open globes. The final step was to assemble the pieces and attach the panels to the desk.
While it’s true that King isn’t a DIY novice, her attempt to upgrade her design shares a valuable lesson. DIY decor projects are often trial and error, and even skilled individuals have to reevaluate their work. Completing a DIY decor project can be one of the most satisfying experiences, but tweaking your design can bring you even more joy.
