The sofa isn’t just a piece of furniture—it’s essentially the heart of your living space. You can’t do much without a sofa in your living room. And because of that, it’s super important to know how to pick the perfect one for your space. But not just any sofa will do. Because they can be quite pricey, it’s only natural to want to go for one that lasts a while. However, not many people even know how to pick a sofa.

Choosing the perfect sofa involves a lot of careful consideration. And luckily, Daniel Ufland, interior design expert and co-founder of online interior styling platform Flitch, is here to help us understand what to look for.

Put functionality at the forefront.

When it comes to picking out a sofa, try not to focus too much on how it looks. Instead, think about how you’ll use it. For movie night? For decoration? To accommodate visitors?

“A sofa is first and foremost a functional piece in the home,” Daniel explains. “Aesthetic concerns are important, but if the sofa doesn’t match what you’ll actually use it for, it’s better to think long-term and make the functional choice. Many other additions, such as pillows and other pieces of furniture, can help make up the aesthetic you want for your living room.”

Understanding your needs can help you make more practical decisions regarding the size and material you need.

(Cushion) comfort is key.

Cushions play a pretty big role in how comfortable your sofa is. So when you’re shopping for a sofa, it’s important to also look at the filling material.

Beyond longevity, be sure to pick a material like foam, down, or polyester based on how firm you like it to be. “This is a harder decision to make while online shopping, as it has much to do with the feel,” Daniel says. “Go to a showroom to try them out if you can, or simply ask friends and family whose sofas you like what material they’re made from.”

Consider the quality of the frame.

Your sofa frame is just as important as the cushion itself. But when shopping for a frame, many people mistakenly prioritize style. However, to find a durable sofa frame for your space, Daniel recommends paying close attention to its quality. “With it constantly bearing weight, the bones of a sofa are essential. Really investigate not only the frame’s material but also the joinings to ensure they’re tip-top quality.”

Investing in a sturdy frame made of durable materials like metal or hardwood can provide a solid foundation for years to come.

Be strategic when picking your fabric.

Fabric contributes to how your sofa looks, but it mostly impacts how practical it is. The next time you’re out looking for a new sofa, be sure to look for materials like leather or microfiber for easy maintenance, especially if you have pets or children.

If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, don’t worry! Daniel advises that “the great thing about fabric is that it can be changed by reupholstering or using fitted slipcovers, allowing you to update your sofa’s style over time.”

Find the right size.

Next up, pick out the right size for your space. Choosing an appropriate size ensures your sofa fits not only your space but your lifestyle, too. And whether you prefer a spacious sectional for entertaining or a more compact option for smaller areas, keep comfort and practicality at the top of your mind. “Pro tip: make sure the sofa you choose will actually fit through the stairwell or doors to your home!” Daniel says. “You don’t want to be stuck reenacting that famous ‘sofa stuck in the stairwell’ scene from Friends!”

You can also consider features like pull-out beds that are perfect for accommodating overnight guests, and modular options that can be rearranged for multiple uses, depending on your needs.
