IKEA has been a millennial favorite ever since we moved out of our parents’ homes and started our journeys as “adults.” From buying furniture for our shared apartment with roommates to decorating our newly purchased homes, IKEA has held us down through it all. But let’s be real: navigating through IKEA’s maze-like setup can sometimes feel like an extreme sport. One minute, you’re looking through kitchen setups, and the next, you’re somehow stuck in the bedding section with no escape in sight. It’s all fun and games until you’ve walked 10,000 steps and are nowhere near finding what you came for.

If this sounds like you, here are some tips to help you master the IKEA run without breaking a sweat.

Do Your Homework

Before stepping into the IKEA vortex, prepare yourself with knowledge about the store. The IKEA app and website are your best friends for scoping out what you want ahead of time. It’s a great way to avoid getting sidetracked by every cool lamp or throw pillow that you see. Plus, checking stock levels at your local store can save you the headache of falling in love with an item that isn’t even there.

Grab a Map

Grabbing a map might seem old school, but it’s necessary when navigating this maze-like store. IKEA’s layout is designed to show off its entire range, which is great if you have hours to spare. If you don’t, that map will help you cut through the clutter and head straight to what you want.

Timing Is Everything

If you’ve ever visited IKEA on a weekend, you know it’s like stepping into a shopping apocalypse. To avoid the chaos, aim for a weekday morning when you can roam the aisles in peace. It’s almost like having the place to yourself, and the staff are more available to help with any questions.

The As-Is Section Is Your Friend

Don’t skip the As-Is section near the checkout. It’s like the clearance bin of your dreams, full of deals and surprises. You might find the exact shelf or table you were looking for at a fraction of the price. It’s hit or miss, but when it’s a hit, it feels like winning the lottery.

Snack Breaks Are Essential

Never underestimate the power of a snack break at IKEA. The cafeteria isn’t just for show—those meatballs can be the perfect pick-me-up after hours of shopping. It’s a chance to sit down, relax, and maybe rethink some of those impulse items you grabbed along the way.
