Tequila is one of the most low-calorie spirits out here, at a mere 60-ish calories per ounce and 40% ABV. That means that you can enjoy a tasty reposado over ice, or as a shot, and it won’t make you stray too far from your fitness goals. But just because you’re not layering on the sugary mixers these days, doesn’t mean you have to go straight, no chaser. For less than 50 more calories you can still craft a cocktail on your rest days that won’t bore you to pieces. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Ranch Water
This might be as low-cal as it gets. You’ll need 2 ounces of tequila (blanco), 1 ounce of lime juice (fresh if you have it), and a healthy pinch of sea salt. Add all three ingredients to a highball glass and stir. Lastly, fill the glass with ice, and finish with 3–4 ounces sparkling water. If simple-yet-effective were a drink, it would be ranch water. The count is somewhere around 130 calories depending on your tequila of choice.
Mexican Mule
If mules are your thing, a Mexican mule using light ginger beer is only around 140 calories. You’ll combine 2 ounces blanco tequila with an ounce of lime juice (fresh is still best), and 4 ounces light ginger beer. Serve this in one of those fancy copper mugs and garnish with a round slice of jalapeño and/or a little cilantro, but maybe you’ve had a very long day and just want to keep it moving, so it’s optional. A lime wedge will do nicely.
Skinny Paloma
This is a classic and a favorite among the skinny cocktails, and there are a couple of ways to make it happen. First, fill a tall glass with lots of ice and combine 2 ounces of silver (blanco) tequila with ½ ounce of fresh squeezed lime juice. Lastly, pour over 3–4 ounces of grapefruit soda, stir to combine completely, and garnish with a lime wedge. Alternatively, you could combine the tequila and lime juice with 3 ounces of grapefruit juice instead of soda, and then top the beverage with sparkling water, soda water, or plain seltzer.
Either way, the paloma is a low-calorie, low-sugar drink that measures up in the flavor department, especially considering that the mixers are roughly a third of the calories of margarita mix.
Coconut Water “Margarita”
Coconut water’s reputation precedes it. It is an exceptional hydrator that helps the body lower blood pressure and keep headaches at bay, replenish electrolytes, and a litany of other benefits. The addition of coconut water in this cocktail only tacks on about 20 calories. With flaked salt and lime juice, you can mix a “margarita” with a smooth flavor that’s unique and refreshing.
Combine 1 ounce of blanco tequila with 3 ounces of coconut water and 1 ounce of lime juice (more if you want that extra tartness) over ice.
Tequila-Kombucha
Kombucha might not be the first and most favored mixer on your list, especially not for tequila. But ignore the booch to your own detriment. The slightly sweet, herbal, earthy bite of tequila meshes well with the fizzy fruity tang of kombucha, especially one flavored with citrus and/or ginger. Kombucha only contributes around 15 to 27 calories to a tequila cocktail.
Simply combine a ¼ cup of your favorite berries, 1 ounce of tequila, and 4 ounces of kombucha to a glass of ice, and let the light, fizzy goodness take you away.
