Who doesn’t love a refreshing margarita? Tart, refreshing and packed with an alcoholic punch, this classic cocktail bar drink is a favorite for many people. The citrus flavor of the fresh lime juice, the sweetness of the simple syrup and the spiciness of the tequila make this a staple drink.
It’s something simple that’s served at a lot of parties, restaurants and just about any bar you go to. Now, imagine a delicious cocktail that’s taken a step further than a regular margarita.
Margaritas already don’t have a lot of sugar in them, but a skinny margarita replaces the sugar with natural ingredients. Even if you don’t drink alcohol, you can make a mocktail version of this type of margarita by leaving out the tequila. Let’s break down what’s in a skinny margarita and how to make it.
What is a Skinny Margarita?
Replacing the sugar with more natural ingredients, a skinny margarita is slightly healthier than a regular margarita. One of the key ingredients that is replaced is sugar, with agave as an alternative instead. Instead of orange liqueur, you use apple juice to add a bit of sweetness. Skinny margaritas are less in calories than regular margaritas and are also versatile. You can replace the orange juice with whatever you desire, fruit purée, jalapeños, cucumbers or skinny syrups, the possibilities are endless.
How To Make a Skinny Margarita
Making a skinny margarita is just as easy as making a regular, and it requires the same amount of ingredients. If you’re trying to drink less sugar and alcohol, make a quick trip to the store for the sugar and orange liqueur replacements. Here’s how to make a refreshing and delicious skinny margarita.
What you’ll need:
- 1 or 2 ounces of silver tequila
- 1 ounce of fresh lime juice
- 1 ounce of fresh orange juice
- 1 tsp of agave
- Ice
- Fresh lime wedges (for garnish)
- Fresh orange slice (for garnish)
- Salt (optional)
Start off by making a salt rim for on your cocktail glass using lime juice and salt. If you don’t like salt, use a low-calorie sugar instead. In a shaker, combine your ice, lime juice, orange juice, agave and tequila. Shake for about 30 seconds and pour over ice in your cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge and orange slice. You can also make this frozen by blending the cocktail with ice instead of shaking. Now, enjoy your skinny margarita!
