The recent TikTok ‘boy room’ trend and 24% increase in Google searches for ‘male room decor’ make it clear that men are ready to upgrade their bedroom aesthetics. Maybe you’re a guy who wants to upgrade your space that feels juvenile or a woman dying to elevate your man’s cluttered and outdated room; it’s never too late to move away from the stereotypical boy room.
Sleep expert Martin Seeley from Mattress Next Day has shared tips on how to take a bedroom from a ‘boy room’ to a room that feels like it belongs to a man.
“Your bedroom is the first environment you’ll be in when you wake up in the morning, so having a clean, tidy space will help you feel confident and on the ball all day,” says Seeley. Here’s how to do it.
Get a proper bed frame.
Putting your mattress on the floor does not allow it to support your body properly. Mattresses need a solid base to distribute their weight and maintain their shape. They also need airflow to prevent bacteria and moisture build-up. Lack of air circulation can lead to an unhealthy sleeping environment with mold and bacteria.
“We’d recommend a metal or wooden bedroom, as they’re easy to wipe clean and allow for maximum air circulation,” says Seeley. “They also easily fit into any aesthetic and can be quite minimalist, which gives a sophisticated vibe we think is best for men’s bedrooms and counteracts the ‘goofy boy’s room’ nicely.
Have a minimalist aesthetic.
A minimalist room is easy to maintain and perfect if you want an effortlessly stylish room. To achieve this, choose one main color and pair it with white—think blue and white or black and white. This keeps your room looking fresh and uncluttered. Avoid mixing too many colors and textures to maintain a clean aesthetic.
Keep your walls neutral and add color through furniture, bedding, or accessories. Adding plants can also elevate the room’s vibe and improve air quality.
Display your interests with style.
A collection of football trophies or action figures might have been cool back in the day, but now they just make the room look cluttered. There’s a better way to display interests. For example, frame sports jerseys and hang them neatly on the wall.
Keep only the items that hold value and display them in a way that aligns with a minimalist design. For fans of TV shows or movies, look for modern prints or posters.
Choose quality bedding.
Bedding is as important as your mattress for a good night’s sleep. Fresh, breathable bedding prevents bacteria growth. Avoid the infamous ‘boy pillow’—flat, worn-out pillows that offer no support. Your pillow should provide proper support to avoid neck pain and improve sleep quality. Side sleepers need a firm pillow to align their neck and spine, while back sleepers need a softer, thinner pillow.
