For interior designer Chloe Griffin, creating the perfect home with fiancΓ© Najm Loyd meant striking a delicate balance between clean lines and cozy comfort. Their Philadelphia apartment demonstrates how thoughtful design can marry seemingly opposing styles into one cohesive space.

  • Hometown: Fayetteville, NC
  • Currently: Philadelphia, PA
  • Size: 1,100 sq ft
  • Rent: $4,200/month
  • Beds: 3
  • Bath: 3

The apartment’s dining area sets the tone for the entire space, featuring a sculptural light oak table paired with black upholstered chairs that echo the striking black-and-white abstract prints on the wall. A pair of terra cotta bouclΓ© chairs in the nearby living room adds warmth and texture while maintaining the room’s contemporary feel.

The living room serves as a masterclass in layering. A cream sectional provides a neutral base, while a statement coffee table with orb-like supports adds architectural interest. The carefully curated gallery wall showcases art in varying styles and frames, creating an engaging focal point that draws the eye up and emphasizes the room’s height. Black, white, and terra cotta hues are repeated throughout, maintaining visual cohesion.

Perhaps the most subtle-yet-striking design moment is the kitchen, where deep blue-gray cabinets create a bold contrast against white countertops and stainless steel appliances. The pair of Bauhaus prints in coordinating blues add an artistic touch, while a cheerful yellow gridded runner injects a pop of unexpected color. “I wanted the kitchen to feel like its own moment while still connecting to the rest of the home,” Griffin explains.

The primary bedroom continues the home’s sophisticated palette while introducing softer elements. A textural wallpaper with an organic pattern serves as a backdrop for family photos in matching frames, while a plush burgundy bench at the foot of the bed echoes the living room’s warm accents. And, in a fun and familiar way, lush plants sprinkled throughout the room bring life and movement to the carefully considered design.

Design should feel intentional but never precious. Every space in this home feels lie it is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. This thoughtfulness is evident in the carefully curated blend of high-design elements with comfortable, inviting touches – from the textiles to the cool color combination – creating a space that’s both visually striking and wonderfully livable.
