Rugs can beautifully transform any room while helping to preserve hardwood floors—until they start to slip, causing potential accidents and damage. A rug pad is the solution to prevent rugs from slipping.

“Rug pads are often overlooked,” says David Chapman, flooring expert and founder of Ultimate Mats. “They act as a protective layer between your rug and the floor underneath.” Made from materials like rubber, felt, foam, and natural fibers, rug pads come in various sizes and thicknesses.

Chapman emphasizes that rug pads are about safety and prolonging the life of your rug and the flooring beneath it. By providing extra cushioning, rug pads prevent rugs from being crushed and help them maintain their shape and appearance over time.

Choosing the Right Rug Pad

While any rug pad is better than none, choosing the right one is important to avoid potential damage to your floors. Cheaper rug pads might be treated with chemicals that can stick to or stain your floors. For hardwood floors, Chapman recommends felt or a combination of felt and rubber pads to minimize the risk of marks.

The lifespan of a rug pad varies based on its material and the amount of foot traffic it endures. High-quality pads made from natural materials like rubber, wool, or felt can last many years, whereas those made from plastic tend to deteriorate more quickly. Regular cleaning, such as vacuuming alongside the rug, helps maintain their durability.

When shopping for a rug pad, consider the thickness of both the pad and the rug. For thinner rugs, a pad that has additional cushioning is key. Thicker rugs may only need a slimline pad to prevent slipping without adding unnecessary bulk.

Material Choices

The material of your rug pad should match the space’s needs. Rubber pads have the best non-slip grip for high-traffic areas or places where children play. Memory foam pads are ideal for bedrooms where comfort is key. Natural fiber pads are a great choice for those prioritizing eco-friendliness.

Different floor types require different rug pads. Natural rubber pads are perfect for hardwood floors as they won’t stain or discolor the wood. In damp areas like bathrooms or kitchens, opt for mold and mildew-resistant pads to protect both the rug and the flooring.
