Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night but still feeling exhausted in the morning? You may need to replace your mattress. A good mattress has the power to give you some of the best sleep of your life while making sure your body stays in alignment. But how do you know when it’s time for you to break up with your mattress and find a new one? We tapped Brian McDaid from Eagle Dumpster Rental and found out the signs that it may be time for your mattress to be thrown out.
Obvious Physical Signs
Life gets busy, and oftentimes, we’re not inspecting our mattresses for obvious wear and tear. According to the Sleep Foundation, the average mattress should be replaced every six to eight years. If you’ve had the same mattress for a while, check to see if there are any rips, tears, holes, or dust mites. “These imperfections aren’t just uncomfortable; they can harbor allergens and dust mites—the ultimate sleep saboteurs,” says McDaid.
It’s also important to check your mattress for sags or lumps, as this can mess up your spine’s alignment and lead to back pain and discomfort. A mattress with good support should cradle your body.
Allergic Reactions
Dust mites love to live in old mattresses. These pesky creatures can cause your allergies to flare up. “Replacing your mattress can significantly reduce exposure to allergens, helping you breathe easier and sleep soundly,” shares McDaid.
Waking Up Tired
A worn-out mattress can mean that you’re finding yourself tossing and turning all night. You know your mattress needs replacing when you start noticing that your sleep cycle is disrupted, and you’re waking up with unexplained aches and pains in your back, neck, or hips. It’s also helpful to take note of whether you get better sleep when staying in hotels or on a couch than when you are on your own mattress.
