If ever there was proof needed that money isn’t guaranteed but you can work hard(er) to get it back, look no further than boxing champion Mike Tyson. The multi-champion boxer (World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation) has earned approximately $400 million over his career.
While some could survive on that salary for the rest of their lives, between 1995-97, Tyson was blowing six-digit charges on pagers, cell phones and birthday parties. Limousine services were costing him $65K, and his live tiger care was as high as $8.1K. And with $23 million owed to the IRS, creditors and his ex-wife, he had to file for bankruptcy in 2003.
The lavish life of Bentleys, jewelry, Bengal tigers and mansions quickly dwindled down, along with giving up his $4 million Ohio mansion that he purchased in the ’90s. It was no mystery who lived there because his name was spelled out in the iron gate. He said goodbye to his five-bedroom home with the full-size pool and Jacuzzi, basketball court and crystal chandeliers, taking a loss in 1999 after selling it for $1.1 million.
In addition to the Ohio home, he also had to part ways with his 25-bedroom Connecticut home (nightclub included) for a little over $4 million. He sold the Connecticut home to 50 Cent.
But in 2023, Tyson has managed to get his money back up. While he’s not making the same amount as he was a couple of decades ago, his current net worth is approximately $10 million. And although his new(er) home is still impressive to the average person, compared to his Ohio mansion, his current home is modest.
Where Does Mike Tyson Live Now?
In 2015, Tyson purchased a six-bedroom, seven-bathroom estate in Henderson, Nevada for $2.5 million. The home is built in an Italian style, and measures roughly 10,400 square feet in size. Other moments of Italian influence can be seen through Mike Tyson’s home by way of the arched doorways and coffered ceilings. Detailed ironwork flanks the spiral staircases and hanging pendant lighting. Dark cherry wood cabinets are seen both in the gourmet kitchen – complete with Thermador appliances – and in the butler’s pantry, which leads into a wine cellar.
His new home includes a media room, a wine cellar, floor-to-ceiling windows, two grandmaster suites, stone fireplaces, a vanishing-edge swimming pool, a spa, an outdoor kitchen and a patio. The acre of land has two casitas, including one that functions as a full apartment.
What Business Ventures Is Mike Tyson Using To Fund His New Home?
As have a lot of people with the increasing change in the legalization of cannabis, Tyson is getting into the industry with his Tyson 2.0 company. He also went from owning tigers to being a vegan up until 2020. Although he’s no longer living a plant-based lifestyle now, he admits that he learned (the hard way) about animal welfare and that tigers can never be domesticated.
As a former fighter of addiction and gambling who spent three years in prison for a rape conviction, nowadays, he’s in another ongoing fight to redeem himself from all of his past ways. While he trains for his upcoming fight on November 15 against Jake Paul, his fans may be just as interested in his Mike Tyson Cares program designed to fight against social injustice, enable prison reform and provide services for the homeless.
