As a longtime music lover, Playboi Carti takes his craft seriously, which is why his fans face such long wait times between albums. His last LP, Whole Lotta Red arrived on DSPs in 2020 after leaks and subsequent delays. While fans are still running up streams on that, they’re also eager to hear his next project. I Am Music is expected to land at the end of 2024, and while he continues to perfect his masterpiece, Carti – born Jordan Terrell Carter – has been doing some promotional interviews. The “Magnolia” artist spoke with Billboard for their August issue, updating hip-hop heads on what they can expect from Playboi Carti and his crew. At the same time, the 28-year-old addressed obsessive fan behavior that forced him to relocate from his Atlanta compound for his safety.
Jordan Terrell Carter’s Rise to Fame Has Been One of a Kind

Before he became the artist we know and love, Carti worked at H&M. He started taking music seriously after being kicked off his high school basketball team, and that decision has worked in his favor. “It’s all based on confidence. I believe in myself. The moment I started recording, someone came to me and said that they like my songs. I stay in the studio every day,” he told Billboard.
In 2015, Playboi Carti relocated from Atlanta to New York City, where he met A$AP Bari and other members of the A$AP Mob. Their leader, A$AP Rocky signed the Atlanta native to his AWGE creative collective the next year. By 2017 Carti shared his self-titled commercial mixtape, which was followed by his debut album, Die Lit, earning a No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200. As mentioned, there were delays leading up to the creative’s sophomore LP, but Whole Lotta Red has been a fan favorite since it arrived on Christmas Day in 2020.
Where Does Playboi Carti Live?

Playboi Carti is notoriously private when it comes to his release dates and creative process, so it’s understandable he strives to keep his personal life the same. While speaking with 032C in 2020, the father of two was living in a “compound, somewhere outside his hometown in Atlanta.” The outlet described one room as “a lounge area that looks like the platonic ideal of an affluent suburban home: sectional sofa, carpeting, pull-down projection screen, a Restoration Hardware mirror.” Elsewhere there was a “Chucky doll in one corner and an assistant quietly rolling blunts in another.”
After WLR finally arrived, Carti admits the fan response was overwhelming. “I’m very blessed,” he acknowledged his gratitude to Billboard. “But it is frustrating because [that’s where] we have to lay our heads.” People sent flowers to the rapper’s mother and even tracked down his home address, causing him to relocate from the compound he once called home. It’s unclear where Carter lives now, and we hope he’s able to maintain some peace and privacy when I Am Music arrives later this year.
