Renting an apartment has its pros and cons. On one hand, a smaller space can be ideal for city dwellers or new couples. It’s often more affordable than owning a home and gives you the freedom to get creative with styling. The challenge, however, comes when you want to make big changes — major renovations are usually off the table. Fortunately, there are ways to get around that with various bedroom upgrades for renters. Interior designer and content creator Tyka Pryde (@tykapryde) proves that you don’t need to break down walls to transform your apartment bedroom.
Her recent video is geared towards the small things you can do to make a big change in your space. While there are lots of decor tips and hacks for renters online, Pryde’s video focuses on the main elements that make a bedroom apartment look bland, boring, and basic. If you’ve rented an apartment before, you’ve probably come across the following: wall-to-wall carpeting, ceiling fans, and beige or neutral walls. These elements are often standard for small-sized apartments, but they can be tough areas to navigate when redecorating. But with creative thinking, styling, and accessorizing, crafting a cozy and stylish space can be easier than you think. Even more compelling? There’s no paint or lighting fixture removal involved.

Step 1: Add Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains
This popular hack is often used in living rooms and bathrooms to elongate the space. Placing the curtains above the curtain rod in a living room or dining room draws the eyes up and gives the illusion of higher ceilings. This also opens up the space, making the floor plan appear much larger than it actually is. The hack works the same way in your bedroom but can be even more beneficial for an apartment with limited windows. If your bedroom has just one window, adding floor-to-ceiling curtains can be a huge advantage, opening up the space and giving it a more balanced look and feel.
Step 2: Add a Curtain Wall Behind the Bed
Accent walls are a common feature in bedrooms, adding a pop of color. However, if you live in an apartment, painting may not be an option. Instead, Pryde suggests adding a curtain wall behind the bed. She explains that it can have the same effect as an accent wall without the hassle of painting. But its benefits extend beyond bringing a pop of color to the space. A curtain wall introduces softness and texture to the bedroom, making it feel high-end and luxurious.
Step 3: Add Wall Sconces
Given the popularity of wall sconces, it’s no surprise that Pryde recommends them as an upgrade to traditional lighting. However, her take on the trend is unique. With the curtain wall in place, you’re not limited to battery-operated lamps and can opt for plug-in styles without having to worry about messy cords. Not only will the curtain hide the cords, but it will also enhance the appearance of the wall sconces.
Step 4: Add Contrasting Colors
Regardless of what color curtains you settle on, Pryde notes that having a few contrasting colors can add balance to the room. Textiles, such as pillows, bed linens, and throws, are a good place to start, as they come in a wide assortment of shades. However, you can also experiment with the finishes of your bedroom furniture’s materials.
