Shaeloren Deering’s 570-square-foot Chicago apartment is more than just a place to live—it’s a thoughtful curation of memories, culture, and a touch of playfulness. Hailing from Des Moines, Iowa, and now making a home in the Windy City, Shaeloren balances her career in research program management with a love for content creation. Her space reflects her unique design style: minimal with a cultural and playful twist.
The apartment is a true celebration of personal style, blending understated neutral tones with meaningful pieces that showcase Black culture and childhood nostalgia. From her “And The B Is For” towel by RavieB x UO in the bathroom to a cherished photograph of her Nana from her twenties, Shaeloren ensures her heritage is beautifully represented in every room. Her story bookcase holds a mix of books, trinkets, and Lego sets, each item intentional and significant, creating a visual timeline of her journey.
The most significant piece in Shaeloren’s home is her Floyd bed—a $1,475 investment (including shipping and taxes) that anchors the space with both style and function. Her home feels inviting, thanks to large windows that flood the space with natural light, enhancing her palette of soft neutrals with an airy, open ambiance. Small pops of color and playful touches—like her Smiski figures and eclectic trinkets—add character without overwhelming the serene environment.
When asked what she loved most about her space, she shared, “This is really my happy place, so like everything in here is intentionally here to make me feel happy, relaxed, and inspired. I literally wake up and thank God for my place constantly.”
For Shaeloren, her space is a reflection of where she is in life. “[It’s] my first place, where I get to embrace my independence as a proud Black woman while keeping. my inner child alive. Every piece has meaning. It’s my balance of strength, joy, and authenticity.”
