Open-plan homes have never been more popular. Today, the idea of scaling back, paring down, and finding happiness in a smaller space is common. Whether you’re making one bedroom into two or looking for a way to separate your living room from your dining room, a partition can be the perfect solution. When one bride-to-be found herself in a similar situation, she opted for a creative fix, using custom curtains as room dividers.
Takeaways
New
There are lots of creative ways to divide a room, including plant walls, slatted panels, and bookshelves. However, curtains are unexpected and offer a unique take on the idea. While most curtain partitions rely on semi-sheer materials to create a breezy effect, London-bred creator @Sincerelyfafs_ opted for a unique approach for her studio apartment in New York City. With just one room, she decided on a chic curtain partition to maximize her space.

The Vision
If you’ve ever lived in a studio apartment, you know the joys and pains of having one room. On one hand, an open floor plan is a blank canvas, allowing you to get creative. On the other hand, creating rooms out of thin air can be a tricky and challenging task. Without doors or built-in elements, creating spaces that transition seamlessly from one to the next requires a great deal of creative thinking. For this creator, the solution came to her before she arrived at her new apartment. Instead of using a traditional partition, she envisioned a soft divider that would provide her privacy and enhance the decor of her home.
Before heading across the pond, she worked with Drapery Box in London to create a custom set of curtains that would serve as the partition. To bring her vision to life, the company designed a lengthy floor-to-ceiling set with soft pleats in an equally subtle hue. Once arriving stateside, she worked with TaskRabbit to bring her vision to life, adding a track to conceal a discreet seal and any loose closures.

The Benefit
When it comes to living in a studio space, comfort and functionality need to come first. For @Sincerelyfafs_, this meant coming up with a solution that sectioned off her bedroom from the living space without awkward furniture. Her custom curtains did this with ease. The floor-to-ceiling length ensured that the bedroom was secluded and gave her an extra sense of privacy while maintaining an airy feel. The material and design of the curtains were also key to giving the space a cozy feel. With soft material and light pleating, they add texture and warmth to the space, making each room feel more intentional and welcoming. Despite being a simple design solution, her creative take has completely transformed how she uses the space.
