I’ll never forget the moment my friend group’s holiday traditions changed forever. It was a chilly December evening, and our group chat was buzzing with the usual end-of-year FOMO. Between work commitments, family obligations, and friends scattered across different cities, catching up seemed impossible. That’s when the idea hit us – why not create our own holiday celebration?
Enter Friendsmas: a blend of friendship and festive cheer that will become your most anticipated gathering of the year.
What Is Friendsmas?
If you’re scratching your head right now, don’t worry—I was too! Basically, Friendsmas is like Christmas but celebrated with your chosen family (aka your friends). It’s that simple. Honestly, it’s become one of my favorite days of the year.
How To Make Friendsmas Your Own
Here’s the thing about Friendsmas—there are no rules! Well, okay, maybe a few guidelines I’ve learned through trial and (a lot of) error:
- Timing is Everything: I learned the hard way that trying to schedule anything after December 15th is basically impossible. Now, my friends and I aim for early December, when everyone’s still around and not totally stressed about family commitments.
- Potluck or Bust: That one time we tried to have one person cook everything? Yeah, no. Potluck style is the way to go—everyone brings their signature dish, and nobody loses their mind trying to be Martha Stewart.
- The Great Gift Debate: We do Secret Santa with a $40 limit. It’s enough to get something nice but won’t break anyone’s bank. Plus, it’s way more fun focusing on one perfect gift than stressing about buying for everyone.
Want to Start Your Own Friendsmas?
If you’re thinking about starting your own Friendsmas tradition, here’s what I’ve learned:
- Keep it chill. The minute you start stressing about making everything perfect is the minute it stops being fun.
- Use a group chat to plan. We have a dedicated Friendsmas chat that goes wild with memes and planning details.
Make it inclusive. Some of our friends don’t celebrate Christmas, but Friendsmas is about friendship first, holiday second. - Take pictures—trust me, you’ll want to remember these moments.
