Grants for homeowners serve to help people either secure the home of their dreams or for upgrades. Many grants are provided by the government but there are also grants created by non-profits and special interest groups.
As a homeowner, who doesn’t need extra cash? From repairs and upgrades to unexpected disasters, the upkeep of a home can be costly. While there is funding available for homeowners to use and apply for, the process can be grueling. From first-time homeowners to clean energy grants, you can find a program to help you with the extra cash you need to buy or upgrade your home.
Here are a few grants for homeowners to consider applying for right now.
First-Time Homeowner Grants
A first-time home buyer grant is a cash award paid to new homeowners at the time of purchase. These grants are available to first-time buyers who may need help with closing costs. The primary focus of these grants is to help strengthen communities by encouraging people to secure homes. Below are a few grants and programs that are available for first-time homebuyers.
- The National Homebuyers Fund
- Forgivable Mortgages
- Discounted Homes from HUD
- Closing Cost Assistance Programs For First-Time Buyers
- Down Payment Assistance Programs (DPA)
- The $15,000 First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit
Low-Income Grants
The Mortgage Report listed the Section 504 Home Repair Program. This is similar to the typical home improvement grants program. “But it’s for people on very low incomes in rural areas who can’t get other financing. While most assistance comes as low-interest loans, applicants age 62+ years may get grants,” the website reported.
Disaster Grants
You never know what can happen and disaster can strike at any time. If you are a homeowner that finds themselves in the middle of circumstances that are not your fault, there are grants available to you. If you are caught in a recognized disaster, you can receive tax credits as well as receive grants to repair your home. During the pandemic, many homeowners used the COVID-19 relief grants to help pay their mortgages.
Homeowner Grants For Marginalized And Special Groups
Whether you are a veteran or part of a First Nation or Indigenous tribe, you can find grants to help you out. The Housing Improvement Program (HIP) is a home repair, renovation, replacement and new housing grant program administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) according to The Mortgage Reports. There are also grants for veterans as well as elders.
Clean Energy Grants
When it comes to clean energy, the government wants more people to make the switch so they are giving you money to encourage you to make your home more green. If you have been thinking about exploring solar energy now is your chance.
Community-Based Grants
If you want to be the best community citizen you can be, you can turn to some faith grants that are typically offered by your local faith-based organizations.
Find which grant will fit your needs and apply. Please note to check your local region and state as well. There are some grants only available to residents.
