Watching your kids grow into young adults is a difficult thing for any parent. However, there are lots of joys associated with them entering the next phase of their lives. As they’re embracing their sense of personal style, there’s a good chance that they may want to change up their bedroom decor. Finding your decor style is all a part of learning to express yourself, and redesigning the bedroom can be a fun journey for both the parents and the child. When content creator Shaheera Saad’s (@zn_homedecor) daughter was ready for an upgrade, she knew it had to be game-changing.
Kids are more attuned to decor trends these days than ever before, so the pressure is on to find a look that strikes a balance between grown-up and free-spirited. However, as a decor consultant, she was well-equipped with the tools for the job. The key lies in prioritizing the elements that will become important during their teenage years. Understanding their style is also essential to creating a room they will love for the years to come.
For Saad, that meant diving into the latest interior design and decor trends. Before the transformation, her daughter’s room prioritized floor space. Kids’ rooms often have an open area for toys and playdates with friends. This room had a bunk bed placed against the wall with a desk and chair underneath it. The compact setup allowed for lots of floor space and room for toy storage. The colors of the room were also an afterthought, with the walls, furniture, and accessories all being white.

Transforming the Space
Much more than another project, this was an opportunity to breathe fresh energy into the room. With her daughter entering her preteen years, creating an ambiance was at the top of the list. So, Saad decided to introduce color into the room. The walls were covered with a dark slate gray that gave the space a moody feel, but the rest of the color scheme was much warmer. Using neutral tones like nude, cream, and muted rose, she infused the room with color without going overboard.
Decor plays a significant role in displaying your personal style. Little touches like lamps, tufting, patterns, and art are a great way to bring the vision to life. In this preteen room, they made all the difference. The soft lamps and lighting above the bed infused the room with a warm glow, while fluting accents on the nightstand, headboard, and bedframe showcased Saad’s flair for design. She also added roses on the nightstand and a faux plant by the window for an organic feel.
Functional Decor
These touches helped make the bed the centerpiece of the room, which is perfect for a pre-teen space. But as kids grow, so do their needs. To keep things functional, Saad added a simple desk along the adjacent wall and floating shelves for books and loose toys. The final result is a room that feels both stylish and age-appropriate for a child stepping into their teenage years.
