If you’re struggling to drift off at night, you might be surprised to learn that a quick way to fall asleep could lie in one of the most mundane daily chores: making your bed. A recent study by The Sleep Doctor reveals how this simple task might be the key to falling asleep faster.

The survey, led by Dr. Michael Breus, a noted authority in sleep science and founder of The Sleep Doctor, examined the bedtime routines of U.S. adults and discovered a correlation between a neat sleep environment and the ease of falling asleep. 45.4% of respondents who make their bed every day and turn down their covers each night reported falling asleep within 20 minutes.

Clean Room, Clean Mind

Dr. Breus explains, β€œA clean room represents a clean mind.” He goes on to say, β€œOverstimulation can lead to anxiety, a common reason we lose sleep. This may have a special meaning in our sleep environment. Making your bed can improve self-confidence, build a foundation for better habits, and help tidy your bedroom, which leads to more order and organization.”

The survey also provided insights into the bed-making habits of Americans:

  • 38.4% of adults make their bed every day.
  • 15.8% of adults never make their bed.
  • Men are 11.4% more likely than women to make their bed daily.
  • Women are 5.6% more likely than men to never make their bed.
  • On average, people make their bed 4.1 days a week.

Making your bed every morning might seem like a small act, but it could lead to significant improvements in your ability to fall asleep quickly and enjoy a more restful night. The great thing about making your bed every day is that there are no cons. β€œAs long as your bed partner is not in it, you should always be OK,” says Dr. Breus.
