When out and about, we protect and care for our purses as if they are a child. We never leave them unattended, we make sure they don’t get dirty or stained, we don’t put them on the floor, and we wouldn’t even dare throw an uncapped pen in them.

But did you consider that our bags are also vulnerable to damage when they aren’t in use? Improperly storing your purse can cause damage such as scratches, stains, discoloration, and loss of shape. No matter the type of bag or material, follow these tips to carefully store your purses to keep them looking new for years.

Stuff your purse.

To keep the bag’s shape and avoid wrinkles, stuff the bag to its full capacity, just like how it came when you purchased it. The original stuffing can be used, but if that is no longer available, you can use leftover bubble wrap or paper from your delivery packages. Another option is stuffing the bag with clothing or towels. However, don’t use paper with ink, like newspaper, when stuffing your bag, since the ink could transfer onto the fabric.

Store the purse in a dust bag.

You know those little drawstring baggies that come with most purses? Yes, that is a dust bag that protects your bag not only from dust but also from being scratched and other environmental elements, like the sun. After stuffing your purse, place it in a dust bag before storing it. If your bag does not come with a dust bag, it can be purchased separately. Another option is using a cotton pillowcase to protect your bag. Avoid putting your purses in a plastic bag which can trap moisture, leading to damage.

Protect the straps of the purse.

It’s important to store your purses upright to maintain their shape, but don’t hang them by their straps. This can cause unnecessary strain on the straps and accelerate wear and tear over time. Instead, have your purses sitting down. If your straps are metal, wrap them in tissue paper to protect them from scratches when stored.

Have a dedicated place for your purses.

Resist the urge to stuff your bags in a box, in the back of your closet, or any place that can cause them to get smushed together. Doing so can damage the bags and cause them to lose their shape or become scratched. Create a dedicated space to store your purses, such as a shelf in your closet or a bookcase. To avoid the purses being packed together, purchase shelf dividers that create a spot for each purse.
