6 Ways To Instantly Create Shade in Your Backyard for Summer Parties

Keep the party going strong no matter the weather.

You can’t have summer without a backyard barbecue or cookout. The season is perfect for firing up the grill, lounging in the pool, and just overall enjoying the great outdoors. But as we all know, with the summer season comes a lot of heat. And if your party is going to be outside, you’ll definitely need to know how to create shade for your guests to relax under. Here’s how to do it.

Umbrellas

For smaller gatherings, an umbrella is a classic shading option. They can be moved around easily so you don’t have to spend too much time trying to take them down when the party is over.

When shopping for an outdoor umbrella, think about what you’ll need it for. For example, market umbrellas that have a sturdy base typically provide just enough shade for dining tables or seating areas. On the flip side, cantilever umbrellas are a bit more versatile, and can be adjusted to block the sun from different angles.

Pop-Up Canopies and Tents

If you need to create shade but don’t want to work too hard for it, pop-up canopies and tents are a convenient solution. You can find them pretty much anywhere they sell patio furniture, like Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Walmart.

The great thing about investing in a pop-up canopy or tent is that you don’t have to do a lot to set them up and take them down. Plus, they come in a wide range of colors and sizes, so you can pick one that matches your party theme.

Outdoor Curtains

Curtains aren’t just for keeping your interior shaded, they do the same for your outdoor space, too. Simply hang them around a pergola, gazebo, or even on a porch to have some fun in the sun without overheating.

And just like regular curtains, outdoor curtains block the sun when you close them. Or if you want to let in the breeze, simply tie them back.

Shade Sails

Shade sails are a stylish way to add shade to your backyard. They kind of look like sailboat sails and can be secured to trees, poles, or the side of your house, adding a cool, contemporary vibe to your outdoor area.

Pergolas and Gazebos

If you enjoy being outside even when you’re not hosting a party, a pergola or gazebo is a more permanent solution that you can use year-round. Beyond creating shade, they’re beautifully designed to make your outdoor space look more elevated.

And on top of that, they’re also really versatile. You can customize how much shade you want by adding fabric covers, climbing plants, or investing in retractable canopies.

Retractable Awnings

Retractable awnings are a super convenient solution because of how flexible they are. These types of awnings are ideal for patios, decks, and other spots that are near the home. They provide shade when extended, and are easy to put away by simply retracting them.

And you can even find plenty of motorized options available, which lets you control how much shade you get using a remote or even your phone!
